What is PREP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)

  • PREP (PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS)

    • PrEP in its current form consists of a daily dosage of the HIV medication known as TRUVADA, which is a combination of two medications used to treat an active infection of HIV.
    • This is not a vaccine and contains no elements, traces or components of the HIV virus itself.
    • This medication is used to prevent a new HIV infection of people who are verified to be HIV NEGATIVE who engage in non-monogamous sexual activities or persons who engage in sexual activity with a known HIV positive person(s) to further reduce the possibility of becoming HIV positive themselves.
    • PrEP reaches maximum effectiveness for receptive anal sex after 7 days of consistent daily use. (source: CDC)

what is truvada?

TRUVADA for PrEP is in a 200mg Emtricitabine - 300mg Tenofovirtwo drug combination. Unlike a vaccine, Truvada doesn't contain any elements of the HIV virus within it.

  • There are many different options available (depending where you live) for access to PrEP.
  • For many the financial burden may be prohibitive but Gilead (the makers of TRUVADA) offer financial assistance which can be used to pay the cost of your monthly prescription in whole or in part (in conjunction with health insurance co-pays).
  • You can inquire upon your doctor for information or for referral to Infectious Diseases to begin PrEP treatment (depending on your medical provider's process).
